As part of an Indo-US Collaboration, the National Institutes of Health, USA has sponsored a series of workshops since 2006 on various aspects of clinical research (with an emphasis on clinical trials), including biostatistics, study design and randomization issues, data management, research ethics, and regulatory aspects. As a continuation of this series, three workshops are planned at SGPGI, Lucknow during 2013 as follows: (i) Workshop on ‘Scientific Paper Writing’ on April 19-21, 2013, (ii) Workshop on ‘Basic Biostatistics’ on July 25-28, 2013, and (iii) Workshop on ‘Observational Studies’ on September 29 to October 2, 2013.
All the workshops are aimed at active biomedical researchers who hold faculty positions. Investigators involved in clinical research, who are in a position to lead clinical research studies, should find this workshop useful. This email is to seek your help in dissemination of information about the workshop. I request you to kindly circulate this information in your institution, particularly among those who have appropriate expertise and experience to benefit from the workshop.
Only a limited number of applicants will be accepted for each workshop. The last date for applications for the three courses are March 3, May 31 and July 31, respectively. A selection committee will notify the successful applicants of acceptance about 4 weeks before each course.

BIRAC Announces 2nd Call for Proposals under the Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) Scheme opens on 01st January 2013
The Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) scheme is for potential entrepreneurs from Academia, start-ups or an Incubatee (Researchers, PhDs, Medical degree holders, Biomedical Engg. Graduates) who have an exciting idea which may be in the nascent and planning stage and there is an unmet need for mentorship and initial funding. The Biotechnology Ignition Grant would help to support and nurture these high risk early starters and their concepts.
|Key Features of the Programme
|The main aim of BIG Scheme is:
a. To establish and validate proof of concept
b. To enable creation of spin-offs.
Scope & Support
i. BIG is for high level of innovation in the Biotechnology sector.
ii. BIG scheme supports only up-to Proof-of-Concept stage.
iii. Funding will be in the form of Grant-in-Aid limited up-to Rs 50 lakh
iv. The period for the study would not exceed 18 months.
v. Funding may also be used for conducting limited market research, patenting costs, working capital during the period, travel, salary etc.

- Company should have a functional R&D laboratory
- If the registered company does not have a functional Laboratory of its own, then it should be incubated in an Incubator which has a functional laboratory.

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is conducting an Online Certificate Course on IPR and Pharmaceutical R&D (CCIPR). The objective of the Course is to provide the platform to understand the working of pharmaceutical industry, its business models, research, regulatory aspects and its relevance with respect to intellectual property rights.
The duration of the online Course is 6 months and would be conducted twice a year.
This is first of its kind of course introduced with specific focus on the interlinking between the pharmaceutical industry and IPR.
Last date of Registration is 25th October 2012.
The Course may be pursued by the any student in pharmacy/ pharmaceutical sciences or industry persons working in the pharmaceutical sector, willing to enter Pharmaceutical R&D, Formulations, Generics, NDDS, Regulatory affairs, Drug discovery, Clinical research, Toxicology, International Business, Business strategy, Strategic planning and the like.
University Grants Commission, under its Emeritus Fellowship scheme, is inviting applications from superannuated teachers’ upto 70 years of age of universities, colleges and institutions approved under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act. The order has been issued by UGC Joint Secretary Dr. CS Meena.
As per the scheme, the candidates should be actively engaged in research and teaching programmes in the preceding years to undertake research, without any restriction of position or pay scales.
The assistance available under the scheme is honorarium of Rs. 20,000/- pm from UGC for two years (non-extendable). While a contingency grant (Non-lapsable) of Rs. 50,000/- pa towards secretarial assistance, travel within the country connected with the research project, stationery, postage, consumables, books and journals and equipments.
Foreign visit in connection with the approved research work of the awardee will be limited to once in a year with the prior approval/no-objection of the Institution/University where the project work is being undertaken along with that of UGC.
The Emeritus Fellow would be entitled to such other privileges including medical facilities as available to the university faculty members, but not housing.
